In middle school at Max Aitken Academy, we have been gradually shifting to a student-centered model where we’ve implemented cross-curricular collaboration projects into our day-to-day. These projects help us focus on customized learning for students, prioritize global competencies, and help us target key skills that students will need for success in the real world. We have been making an effort to offer lots of choice to hook our kids and keep them engaged while at school.
For this climate action collaboration project we want to students to choose topics that matters to them with regard to protecting and preserving the environment. By completing climate action activities to pay back their carbon tax debt, students will discover ways to make a difference in their school, community and beyond. We know that the real-world lessons they will learn during this collaboration project will carry forward into their futures as global citizens.
We rallied our students with a fun ‘video game’ themed launch a few weeks back to get them excited about the project. They are now busy in the planning and research stage. Stay tuned for our project expo of student learning in the New Year!
